Katy is an artist living and working in Minneapolis, MN. Her work is informed by the natural beauty of Minnesota and the metropolitan area where she lives.
Katy paints using water color and wax on rice paper in a Batik style. The paintings are finished with gouache and pastel. Light plays and important role in the artistic expression of her work. The wax and water media create tension and the pastel adds to the surface texture of the painting. Katy likes to capture a moment in time, when the subjects are interacting in their environment with each other. When molten wax is added to the rice paper it becomes translucent, adding another layer of light and expression.
Katy also paints with Encaustic (Bees wax, resin and Oil paint) on wood panel, exploring the movement and light refraction in water. She studies and paints waves, rivers, and waterfalls. Encaustic is also used to coat and protect some of her Batik style paintings, making them water tight.
Katy also works with clay as a ceramic artist. She designs simple pottery using antique Korean pottery tools. The pots are decorated with paintings honoring the animals and birds of our region.
